No one in San Joaquin County should be breathing a sigh of relief over air quality. But the failing grade the county gets from the American Lung Association in today's annual report card has been taken to task by regional air pollution regulators.

The state would take a run at establishing a direct Amtrak route to San Francisco from the San Joaquin Valley under the terms of a bill that passed its first committee Tuesday.

Outbreak could impede California's economic recovery

The last thing California's weak economy needed was a swine flu outbreak flaring up in Mexico. Although substantial harm seemed unlikely Monday, the outbreak could do some economic damage to California agriculture, tourism and international trade.

Stimulus grants will renovate Valley sewer systems
The San Joaquin Valley towns of Cutler and Caruthers will renovate their wastewater systems with the help of economic stimulus grants announced Tuesday. Caruthers in Fresno County will receive $2.5 million and tiny Cutler in Tulare County will receive a $1.7 million loan and $1.1 million grant. The money is part of a larger economic stimulus package.

Many in the local agricultural industry were already unhappy with state Sen. Dean Florez. A proposed law the Shafter Democrat authored and held hearings on last week in the Senate Committee on Food and Agriculture isn't changing their perception.

Yosemite Falls still spectacular despite state water shortage
California's drought seems like fiction up here with thundering Yosemite Falls leaving lines of gawkers soaked and shivering. The 2,425-foot trio of waterfalls - the tallest in North America - can easily be seen a mile away, but visitors can't resist getting up close to that blast of icy water.
